Hinkley Point tide gauge site

The tide gauge building is located in "A" station at Hinkley Point nuclear power station. The pressure transducers are mounted on the caisson 500m off-shore.

Tide gauge location

The GRP building houses the tide gauge equipment which consists of a POL DATARING data logger monitoring both of the full-tide pressure sensors. The sensors are mounted on a steel pole and are attached to the caisson cables running through the access tunnel connecting the sensors to the data logger.

The tide gauge is levelled to the tide gauge bench mark supported by Ordnance Survey auxiliary marks.

Site history

1990 – Tide gauge system installed
1991 – The pressure sensors were lifted and the blocked sensing nozzles were removed - a new type of nozzle was fitted
1993 – The pressure sensors were lifted, cleaned and replaced
1996 – The pressure sensors were lifted, cleaned and replaced
2006 – The pressure sensors were lifted, cleaned and replaced
